a wonderful birthday

yesterday was my birthday. and a wonderful day it was! i got to skype with both my sisters and both my nieces, talk to family, dinner with a sister-in-law and hang out with randy all day. the sun was shining and i’d like to think that maybe, just maybe, spring will be arriving soon in northwest montana. i hope so because we’re planting seeds (indoors) on wednesday! more on that later.

after morning coffee, cookies and scones, i opened a birthday package from some family and an awesome card from randy (that said, “it’s your birthday, lettuce celebrate” with a picture of a really happy head of lettuce 🙂 ). he got me a gift card to my favorite store in town with the thought that i could pick out another le creuset pot.  they are the prettiest pots i’ve seen and we’re hoping to get a purple one. the store didn’t have purple, so i got a frog designed snack taxi and we headed south.

i had been looking forward to going to lake como for several weeks now. we had been hoping to cross-country ski but with all this warm(ish) weather there is not much snow on the trails. so we took a hike, which in my mind is not settling because i. love. hiking.

wolf lichen - there are different kinds of lichen but this type is called wolf lichen because people used to put it in carcasses of dead animals so that when wolves would eat the carcass they would be poisoned

the deep cracks on a ponderosa pine smell like vanilla. may look silly, but try sniffing a ponderosa next time you see one!

after hiking in the woods a while we headed down to the frozen lake. hiking together is the best.

we started our trek back north, to missoula. first, a stop at wildwood brewery in stevensville.

i got the bodacious bock. delicious.

we then continued north. throughout the day, the truck was making odd noises and the shifter was vibrating. we talked about taking it to an auto mechanic at some point next week to check it out. too late.

about 3 miles from our house the truck started to jolt, shake and make all sorts of odd movements. about 5 seconds later, it was toast. this is us, sitting in a turning lane of a main road, with our flashers on, waiting for the tow truck. it sorta felt like our transmission died, but we're hoping not as that was replaced a few years ago. only owned this truck a month. sigh.

our truck was towed to a nearby auto mechanic. hopefully on monday we will know more about what went wrong. thankfully we did not get hurt, no one rear-ended us during the crazy break down and krista was in town to pick us up. nothing we can do for now, so…

we had our 9th of the month pizza date! we went to our favorite pizza place in town (biga pizza). we got a flathead cherry, sicilian sausage and winter squash pizzas. lekker.
